Cashiers North Carolina- Cashiers is situated in the mountains between the Great Smokies and South Carolina and is located in Jackson County. Cashiers/Sapphire Valley has a great resort feel and is known for its vacation and retirement atmosphere. Jackson County is one of the largest counties in Western North Carolina, it is home to the highest mountain lake east of the Mississippi. Thorpe Lake (or Lake Glenville, as it is know by the area residents) was built in the early forties by Alcoa.
Jackson Countyis home to several lakes and some famous rivers, one of which is the Cullasaja River, where a portion of the movie Deliverance was filmed. Sapphire Valley, in southern Jackson County, is named for the gem mining of the past. Many of the Christmas trees supplied around the US originate here. Some of the major towns in Jackson County include Sylva, Dillsboro (home to The Smoky Mountain Railroad), Cullowhee (location of Western Carolina University), Glenville (where Thorpe Lake is located), and Cashiers/Sapphire Valley. Elevations in the county range from 2,000 feet to 4,800 feet.
